Land of Bread and Honey is an exhibition of a sequence of drawings and paintings by Oscar Marcus Boyle focused on the subject of bread.
Bread is a substrate for jam, butter, anything you desire. It is ten-, fifteen-, thirty-thousand years old; as old as time, older than history, inextricably linked to global culture, economic- and power-structures, technological advancement, endlessly various in its forms, and, when available, it nourishes. Even gluten intolerance is itself a relationship with bread, and, indeed, there is now bread manufactured and marketed specifically to agree with your systems and readily available in supermarkets, usually on a special aisle or shelf.
The works in the exhibition reference a wide array of visual and cultural history both having to do and not having to do with bread, from Ancient Egyptian painting to Thin Lizzy to Google Maps.
